No Mirror Movement's Dance Collective is overjoyed to begin our 4th Season and welcome in new members to our unique community of artists committed to personal and societal transformation.
WHO WE ARE: At our core, we believe acceptance of self leads to acceptance of others. This mantra is echoed in our performances, rehearsals, and relationships with each other. What makes us unique is our mission and our members. We are an all levels and open styles dance collective dedicated to challenging the status quo. We do this by practicing radical inclusivity, personal healing, artistic and psychosomatic expression, and community solidarity. Together, we engage in the ever unfolding process of showing up for ourselves and others. We fuse spoken word and a variety of dance styles in to our pieces, with a focus on house, hip hop, contemporary and whacking.
OUR PROCESS: 1. We take our name seriously by mainly rehearsing outside, and never in front of mirrors! It's beautiful and refreshing so come join! ♥
2. We practice Collectivism by recognizing each person has something meaningful to contribute to the community and no ones contribution is more valuable than another. This is modeled through each dancer's different time commitments, participation in Pods (what we call our committees), financial responsibilities, skills shared, and an acknowledgment of our various dance levels, personal backgrounds and internal states.
3. Throughout the season, we focus on embodying and exploring a personal healing goal which becomes the inspiration for various dance, spoken word and art pieces showcased in our Spring production. We explore and grow in these goals by using somatics, expressive arts, mindfulness and peer support in our rehearsals.
A TYPICAL REHEARSAL: *Every Monday from 6:15-9:15 outside at the YBCA pending weather *We each alternate bringing snacks/food for the group to share since rehearsals happen during dinner time
Our three elements in each rehearsal are: 1) A movement practice (ex: yoga, cypher, dance technique) 2) A psycho/emotional/social practice (ex: intuitive practices, regulating your nervous system, learning how to repair in relationships, quieting your critical voice, loving your body) 3) A creative expression practice (ex. freestyle, creating/learning choreography, spoken word, storytelling)
MOCK SCHEDULE: 6:15 - 6:30 = Business Meeting 6:30 - 7:15 = Warmup (opening prayer/meditation, yoga sequence, cypher) 7:15-8:00 = Skill share (popping, whacking, contemporary skills etc.) 8:00-8:30 = Psycho/Social/Emotional practice 8:30-9:00 = Creative expression practice (ex: create a spoken word by yourself on this topic, pair up and set movement to the words with a partner, share with the group) 9:00-9:15 = Cool-down/Closing circle
SEASON 4 ACTIVITIES: *Fall Retreat *Open Styles+Whacking Community Jam + Performances (dec.) *Pieces from Kinesthesis created into video visual projects *Spring Retreat *Community performances *Spring Production created completely by us (this past year was Kinesthesis...we sold out both shows!!) *Personal, relational and community healing ♥ and who knows what else : )
OPEN REHEARSAL: Whether you want to just come dance with us for the evening to see what our community is like or if you're really thinking about joining the company, we want to see you! Open rehearsal is our way of getting to know you to see if our community is the right fit, and also for YOU to experience our community and see if it's the right fit. We will have our usual 3 practices, but will also allow for a good chunk of time at the end for a Q&A circle to better understand the commitment. You will also have a chance to speak 1-on-1 with our founder/director, SammyMac, to gain further clarity on our dance collective and determine together if it feels like a yay or nay ♥
If you have any questions, concerns, or just excitement you want to share, you can always DM us or email us at info@nomirrormovement.org
We hope to see you for a fun evening under the stars and in community!
